What is it that I see out there
All those rough cracks in earth so bare,
They seem to spread across the ground
New fresh roots waiting to be found.
There is this light green piercing through
Can it be that springtime is due,
What is it we are noticing
Why, first sign of an early spring !
I have traveled over mountains where the missionaries trod
As they brought to all the natives many messages from God
I have crossed the mighty rivers where they struggled for their lives
To ford the very waters in which the power of God survives
I have listened to the wind as it has played its mournful tune
And I thank the distant stars that we each share the sun and moon !
The wind it whistles round the bend
And seems to whine “I’m here again”
It travels on to conquer more
With hoary breath and gusty roar
Oh, hear the sound and noisy shout
I sure get tired of striking out !
The frothy foam that caps the waves
And dredges sand from seashell graves
That long have hidden from our sight
Choose now to face the morn’s veiled light.
The ocean creatures deeper go
Escaping nature’s undertow
While seagulls frantic overhead
Search for a perch that’s safe instead !
Both you and I must reach for breath
As all the air seems sucked to death
The wind whips round with heightened speed
Oh grant us Lord, the strength we need !
Tan, orange, yellow, brown and umber too
Fall colors all just waiting there for you
Their happy faces laughing all the while
So full of zest and sporting lots of style
Thank you dear Lord above, how did you know
What treasure grand these autumn leaves would show ?
Well, thoughts are things and birds have wings,
Feathers come from geese and egret
The sparrow trills,the robin sings
And crows caw too loud in regret.
The skylark sings when sailing high
As falcons swoop from lofty nest
The hawk, he zooms up in the sky
Although I think the owl’s the best !
The lonely dove does pine for love
While the eagle mates forever
The world is round, blue skies above
Can that change the outcome, never !
The winds that blow and bring us snow
Seem without rhyme or reason
And force most birds to southward go
Till we reach a better season !
Looks like it’s time to settle in
Time for a game of bridge or gin
Perhaps we could do Scrabble too
I’m pretty good at words, are you ?
Of course I’d rather be outside
But there’s no place that we can hide
The weather is not playing fair
And drizzle’s raining ev’rywhere !
It seems to me that nature rules
Things that we do, tools that we use
This happened aft the world became
Under the dominance of Cain !
The raindrops fall upon the sill
The clouds are now at overfill
And moving in their passive way
The rains await another day.
The sky is full of sweet surprise
Beginning with each new sunrise
The stars all twinkle through the night
Some to be hidden from our sight.
The wind that powers every breeze
Silent ripples midst natures frieze
While sounds of life are vibrant still
They carry on and always will !
“THE EARTH ABIDETH FOREVER”
I’ve spent the morning in the park
And watched the shadows growing dark
Quite soon the rains will shower down
And all the clouds will sport a frown.
The birds above will share a bath
While toads and frogs hop in the path
The rain will seep into the ground
To soak the seeds that it has found.
A simple truth we can’t deny
That we are only passing by
We need the rain to help us see
Our world bathed in complexity !
God’s music plays, I hear the sound
Reverberating all around
The rustling of the varied trees
With branches swaying in the breeze,
While birds o’erhead with fluted tone
Keep warning us this is their zone
The insects add their special hum
That covers the entire spectrum.
The ocean’s rush, the thunder’s clash
The drip, drip with each puddle’s splash
These are the notes that we all hear
God’s symphony sweet on the ear !
Where are you going little mouse
Rapid sneaking around each house
In the halls you skirt and scurry
Rushing always in a hurry.
You seem to move so very fast
The world you know is not that vast,
Appears that God has met your need
And granted you some extra speed.
I wonder what you’re looking for
As you do scoot from door to door
Oh little mouse with tiny feet
Sad that your life ends in defeat !
We little know or can surmise
What fate will bring or life surprise
Each day begins with a clean slate
That offers chance upon its plate.
A new beginning one and all
The chips of life await the call
But who will win or who will lose
I do not know who gets to choose.
Enough to say I cannot bear
Too many times life is not fair !
The pavement’s wet with falling snow
The cobblestones all seem to glow
The streetlamps shine their welcome light
Upon this quiet snowy night.
The flakes drift down no two alike
Afar I hear the muffled strike
As hands upon the town’s tall clock
Declare midnight, tick tock, tick tock.
Quite peaceful as this seems to be
With scant hints of fragility
Tis sad that we may never know
All of the beauty God does show !
Tis long I’ve followed yon beckoning star
To seek I think what is the road too far
Since I’ve traveled long and I’ve traveled wide
And know the secrets that I need to hide,
Though all lessons taught were perfunctory
Yet each day held oh so much more to see
As the time wore on I’d begun to feel
What life’s all about is portrayed unreal !
The rain it falls upon the ground
With rivers rising all around
Tree branches laden bend and moan
The body aches and muscles groan.
Torrential rain makes hearing hard
As flooded steeets and muddy yard
Make navigation extra rough
And keeping dry a task quite tough.
What would we be without the rain
Perhaps some desert near Bahrain
Or great Gobi in China’s west
Let’s all agree to keep the best !
The joy, sweet joy each morning brings
The sun’s awake and nature sings
I hear the sounds each raindrop shouts
While running down the gutter spouts.
The rush of water splashing by
Inspires the rainbows in the sky
Though early morn seems cold and bleak
It has a voice that needs to speak.
We are alive and truly blessed
Awaiting life at God’s behest
With so much more we’ve yet to taste
There’s not one moment left to waste !
I’ve heard the raucous seagulls by the shore
I’ve watched them dive and fish and dive some more
Their noisy bunch increasing by the score.
I’ve been enthralled by their sheer nautic ease
And watched them as they flew o’er stormy seas
Do they fare well in winter’s wind-swept freeze ?
I cannot guess the challenges they face
Or how it is they have survived life’s chase
But sure am I that they have kept apace.
Tis strange that God has chosen all the birds
To echo the full measure of His words,
“That neither sow nor reap”, is not absurd !
I hear a rustling in the tree
And wonder now who can that be
See there a flash of mottled coat
A vision of especial note.
Oh precious bird, what do you do
Is there a way I can help you
I wish I had some cracker crumb
I’d be so pleased to feed you some.
But you and I are at loose ends
There seems no way we can be friends
For what you have is your sharp beak
While all I have is tongue in cheek !
The wind it shuttles through the trees
The rain that clings begins to freeze
The icy branches bend with ease.
Reach out, reach out and take my hand
To guide you through God’s wonderland
Where beauty shows superb and grand.
Seems all of life’s encased in glass,
Encrusted ice that can not last
And scatters with each windy blast.
You view the fairy castles there
They tremble in the sunlight’s glare
For soon, too soon all will be bare !
Now who are we to judgement make
While this whole world does shake and quake
The time has come for all to see
The price of peace is never free !
When lions roared throughout our past
The world they knew was wild and vast
But time and changes took a toll
Destroying them in their life role.
The king of beasts has lost his crown
His kingdom is all tumbling down
Will they survive, these strong and bold
While love lost pales and soon grows cold ?
Oh ladybug where have you been
What kind of trouble are you in
I see you there upon the floor
How did you enter through my door ?
You must have hidden in the greens
Because my windows all have screens
There is a question I must ask
It will not keep you from your task.
Oh little bug you move so fast,
The good you do is great and vast
Your species spreads around the earth
When will we realise your worth ?
As I pulled up my windowblind
To welcome God’s bright warm sunshine
A little bird chirped in so gay
As if to wish me happy day
I laughed at him and tapped the glass
He glanced at me and then flew passed.
This little bird knows paradise
He nests and sings and when he dies
Where e’er he bides woodland or farm,
He leaves no mess and does no harm
His world about will carry on
The job he does is soon passed on !
There is a bird still sings to me
From way up high in God’s great tree
He sings so sweetly in the air
Sometimes I wish he weren’t there
Because he makes me think that I
Would follow him if I could fly
While birds were born to fly and sing
Both you and I wear God’s clipped wings !
The Christmas stars are in the sky
They last from August through July
They twinkle bright and travel round
Their numbers grow and do abound
I find my curiousity
Increases with all that I see.
If only I were oh so smart
Instead of thinking with my heart
Perhaps I could then understand
How this old world was built so grand !
I’ve traveled wide across the sea
To feed my curiousity
I’ve been to lands so far away
In places that I chose to stay.
Along the ridges of the cliffs
Or edges of the ocean’s rifts,
The wonders that are ours to taste
Like cultures we must not erase
Fill this old world with magic spin
And beauty we may revel in,
With so much more that’s yet to come
In God’s expected new kingdom !
I took a walk the other day
The air it smelled so sweet
The wind it blew along the way
It rustled down the street.
I thought that God must truly be
So pleased with what He’s done
Midst mountain peaks with every tree
That grows under the sun.
Each sandy beach with ocean wave
That washes on the shore
Reminds us all how much He gave
How much there is in store !
Each morning as the daybreak wakes
I hear the sound that nature makes
The leaves that rustle in the trees
With branches brushing all the eaves
And wings of birds fast in their flight
To quell the hunger of the night.
The simple sounds of life abound
And fill the void that silence found
That teaches us to listen close
For nature’s sounds, loud and verbose !
