When I was but a little child
And life was newer, sweeter, mild
My mother taught me many things
About the joy that kindness brings
And why respect’s a two way street
When often strangers chance to meet
The earth is precious needing care
With trust the virtue all must share !
There is an echo that we hear
It speaks to all both loud and clear
Remember for each time we fall
The will one needs to stand up tall
Lies in the grace of God above
Who showers us with selfless love
While all we’re asked our lifetime through
Is to His virtue, remain true !
When I look up into the sky
So full of creatures that do fly
Where images that catch my eye
May mix with clouds here passing by.
Imagination can’t restore
What it is we are searching for
That special something most adore
A secret gift behind each door.
The world is full of guile and guise
Beneath the sea, above the skies
We live in times of great disguise
Truth is hidden amongst the lies !
I’ve sailed upon the seas of life
Both when it’s calm or full of strife
And I can say without a doubt
That safety nests in faith devout.
There is no time to make amends
Nor look about in search of friends
For God demands the total count
Of all we’ve done in what amount,
The good, the bad, the inbetween
Of what we’ve said and what we mean
He understands and will forgive
He is the reason we all live !
Oh would that we might comprehend
How paths in life walk hand in hand
With all we need to understand
Like values held both small and grand.
Tis sad that most share virtue lost
Yet do not pause to count the cost
Or thought to help avoid exhaust
Without some chance to hit defrost !
Where are you going little mouse
Rapid sneaking around each house
In the halls you skirt and scurry
Rushing always in a hurry.
You seem to move so very fast
The world you know is not that vast,
Appears that God has met your need
And granted you some extra speed.
I wonder what you’re looking for
As you do scoot from door to door
Oh little mouse with tiny feet
Sad that your life ends in defeat !
Oh that we might remember well
The classic tales that wisemen tell
Of love and pain and avarice
And joy and fear and fate amiss.
See how the world progresses on
From Eden into Babylon
The changes wrought may interfere
With what you’re taught year after year.
I yearn to taste the glory old
That laces stories I’ve been told
The magic’s gone from all we see
Leaving but mediocrity !
How sad am I that I can’t fly
Like Icarus, I can but try
More sad indeed that when I do
I seem a fool to quite a few.
Tis hard to be just one more guy
Who tried and fell out of the sky
I need to find some path that’s new
To reinvent my old virtue !
Each morning as I brush remains of sleep
From eyes that age with time and easy weep
About the path this life seems bound to keep
In our lost world that values truth too cheap
I pray the God of kindness heeds us soon
To save our simple souls from endless ruin
And bring us home again to life in tune
With virtues shared beneath His sun and moon.
