I’d like to think where e’er you are, you hear the bugle’s call
And know we’re missing you from mid-November through next fall
I see you in the twilight just before the even’s pall
It’s with morning sunlight rising I miss you most of all !
I’d like to think where e’er you are, you hear the bugle’s call
And know we’re missing you from mid-November through next fall
I see you in the twilight just before the even’s pall
It’s with morning sunlight rising I miss you most of all !
My heart is wild, I know the tune
I hear the sound midnight or noon
It echoes sadly aft we start
Before life ends or lives must part !
Oh would that we might understand
The first salute or clasp of hand
An early blessing, new command
A grand new start before we stand !
I’ve seen the troops in battle dress
They make me proud I must confess
I wish they were but dressing-up
To partake of sweet valour’s cup
Instead of battling someone’s cause
While fighting in these futile wars.
There is no break nor any end
The fracas leaves no untouched friend
There’s no peace found to fill the air
We’ve only distress everywhere.
The saddest part we must accept
We’ve done our job and are bereft !
When I recall how life is spent
I wonder where my childhood went
I guess the aged think like me
Together we share empathy.
In all the time that has gone by
Seems childhood is the first to fly
The lessons learned, the very best
They’ve helped us to survive life’s test.
We made it through this miracle
No stopping now, what e’er we do !
Now I’ve writ for many a year
Both out of love or foolish fear
I’ve learned to cut my words in half
To add a chuckle or a laugh,
And scale down every fancy word
So that my thoughts are plainly heard
I beg You Lord not to forget
That these old bones have some use yet !
Sometimes I wish I had a horse
Not one who races on the course
But wooden, painted, made by hand
By skilled craftsmen whose work is grand.
Carousel horses can be smart
Carved and sculpted right from the heart
With pony tail that flicks and flies
Plus eyelashes o’er bright glass eyes.
Oh what a thrill that it would be
To ride that swift painted pony,
I dream that one day I may find
That special horse my mind combined !
Rage, rage against the breaking dawn
Rage, rage against the coming storm
And silent let the pressure swell
Unto the world our sadness tell,
This story of its own demise
That happens here before our eyes.
For what is there the heart must ask
To bring to us a greater task ?
Our Lord in heaven see and hear
The ending grows too close, too near !
Hang on to your wishes whatever they are
For a life without dreams will never go far !
To live a life of no regret
To dream until that last sunset
To know what one is waiting for
Or how to seek the proper door,
To find a light when it grows dark
Or follow pathways in the park
To lend a hand to all who need
Or understand when one must lead,
These are the things that men should learn
When time does come to be their turn.
Our God has writ what all must do
To be His servant kind and true !
I love to travel by the train
Note, I don’t mind if plush or plain
Railroad cars are the finest way
If truly seeking getaway.
There’s much to see along the track
On every side, both front and back
Oh such great joy a trip can be
Each ride filled with frivolity !
Sometimes there’s food, sometimes there’s not
But dining cars sure feed a lot
If on your trip you’re going far
There is an observation car.
It’s so much fun to go by train
I can’t wait to do it again !
There are no words one chance may say
That work to melt the pain away
True, words are meant to help us cope
Once truth has gone, there’s only hope.
Perhaps hope stretches with each smile
And keeps one safe a little while
Perhaps a prayer, perhaps a few
Will garner strength to follow through.
Keep dreaming of God’s charity
Whate’er we need, it’s there, it’s free !
Speak softly now, oh my sweet soul
And we shall make it to our goal
Let kindness be the guide we use
While arrogance must we refuse.
For who is there will bear the pain
Of impudence again, again
The folly of impatient fools
Will put to waste all proper rules.
Beware my dear we have small choice
Tis better far speak sotto voiced !
Now I have lived my life complete
Met with success and with defeat
Saw my hopes shattered and decayed
And all my dreams destroyed, delayed.
I’ve lived alone without embrace
And spent some time in empty space
I’ve loved and laughed in my small world
And dodged the troubles life has hurled.
I found my faith was ever strong
And early learned where I belonged
There’s but one place I pray to go
When it comes time for my last show !
I wish that you and I could be
Together in eternity
Forever is a long, long time
And can be quite a lonesome climb.
But you and I may truly be
Good partners through infinity
I cannot name another one
Who’d bring such joy and lots of fun.
And so old friend we’ll find much luck
If I’m your daffy, you’re my duck !
Times I have spent the lonely night
In front of fire by candle light
And watched the shadows on the wall
With quiet passion rise and fall.
I’ve felt the chill invade the room
Its fingers spreading cold and gloom
What mystery do we have here
I sense its movement growing near.
Beware my heart as truth can fail
And danger lurks beyond the veil
For what we seek as heaven sent
May be at odds with God’s intent !
I find myself remembering
Those things that once were used to be
When days were sweet and lingering
And hearts were fond of liberty
While life itself was happening
And peace was all we sought to see !
I praise You Lord, You are the King
You are the Boss of everything
The earth, the sun, the moon on high
And all the objects in the sky !
How great You are, the world can’t know
This universe is Your big show
I love You Lord, please lead the way
I pray You’ll help us save the day !
My heart has been alone too long
It’s learned to sing a solo song
The words get lost along the way
The melody has gone astray.
Yet sure I am as nighttime falls
My memory of faith recalls
Those joys that God does share with me
The beauty of His world I see !
There’s an old rocking chair I do recall
Remembrance of days when I was so small
While my nana cuddled and held me tight
If I was tired and lost or full of fright.
As we rocked away in that wornout chair
With many a ride we’d places to share
I believe each child is entitled to
A view of the world from a lap or two,
I pray each gets the opportunity
To bond with someone as special as she !
I’ve reached the crossroads of my life
The way’s ahead replete with strife
No matter where I search to find
The road I seek does wind and wind.
There is no path that ‘s straight to tread
Both for the living or the dead
My body’s weary, my heart worn
As peace and rest from me are torn.
I fail to see the sense of it
Sometimes I’d simply like to quit
But I’m sure God will still be there
To help us face our last despair !
I know the price, I’ve played the game
We are no two born quite the same
Except for twins identical
Though that’s not always typical
For God has made each one of us
A member of His own chorus.
With heart and soul we try to sing
Both words and tune remembering
That in the end the difference
Is oh, so small and makes no sense
For we are His, spirit and mind
All shapes and sizes you can find !
Tis true I have no faith in make-believe
Nor swayed am I by goals I can’t achieve
But live with hope that this old world can change
To give all lives and dreams a greater range !
Of all the words we’ve left unsaid
Both true and wise before we’re dead
Too few are worth their final breath
Aft all is done we still greet death !
