I had a call just yesterday
A friend told me you went away
I’m sorry that I was not there
I’m sure you knew how much I cared.
We have been friends for forty years
And shared our coffee, laughs and tears
I’ll miss you kid, I feel so bad
So much in common that we had.
We lived our lives and kept no score
And understood what was in store
What shall I do now that you’re gone
I’ll trust in God and carry on !
What kind of day will it be today
I can hear the world at work and play
As noise of construction fills the air
Sirens are blaring fron who knows where.
The buses are rushing, hear the sound
While busy jitneys circle around
I hear the echo of running feet
Clattering rapidly down the street.
Well I guess the day has had its start
And the early rush will soon depart
How I pray each day as I awake
There’s some small improvement I can make !
All our dreams are battered and worn
The flag we love, tattered and torn
Our values distorted and bent
Who knows where our future went ?
Perhaps we dreamt a bit too much
Or trusted those of questioned touch
We followed paths that were unknown
Where seeds of doubt had long been sown
And so it seems we’ve run offtrack
We’d like to take our power back !
It seems the hours just tick on by
While all my days have learned to fly
There is no time for this to last
As days and months have rapid passed
And what began so long ago
Is now approaching its last show.
Wish I knew how the story ends
But I don’t have those kind of friends
I guess I’ll have to wait a bit
To see how all the pieces fit !
Well, thoughts are things and birds have wings,
Feathers come from geese and egret
The sparrow trills,the robin sings
And crows caw too loud in regret.
The skylark sings when sailing high
As falcons swoop from lofty nest
The hawk, he zooms up in the sky
Although I think the owl’s the best !
The lonely dove does pine for love
While the eagle mates forever
The world is round, blue skies above
Can that change the outcome, never !
The winds that blow and bring us snow
Seem without rhyme or reason
And force most birds to southward go
Till we reach a better season !
The beauty of this nation that grows and flows and shows
From the heights of all its mountains o’er which our sun glows
To the depth of each valley and green of all the hills
That the heart may surely treasure as part of God’s thrills
Brings to us joyous pleasure with promises untold
Teaching simple lessons how life’s mysteries unfold !
The sky o’erhead is overcast
It’s great expanse is far too vast
We’ve elements for any taste
And all that air a shame to waste
Compared to when we are aground
Where lush hills circle all around.
There is no sound so sweet to hear
As cheeky birdsong on the ear
I’d like to think that when they sing
The bells in heaven start to ring
The angels echo their reply
They light the stars in darkened sky !
Cloistered here among all my things
The peaceful sound of morning rings
An early chill does charge the air
I waken to God’s loving care
The day breaks with another chance
To soothe my soul and life’s romance
And oh such joy to be awake
The difference one day can make !
There are those thoughts that slip away
Into the realm of yesterday
Deep hidden midst one’s memory
Like moments caught in reverie
At times drawn from the saddened past
To seek those dreams that did not last !
There is a chill it’s in the air
From tingling toes to face and hair
And warns that winter’s on the way
But doesn’t say how long she’ll stay.
Oh please old crones that rule the wind
Be kind to those who are thin-skinned
Take care they’re safe from all the cold
Though winter’s force be ever bold !
The fall just seems to crisp one up
Like cocoa in a steaming cup
The air is brisk the odor sweet
I felt my heart, it skipped a beat.
The years are ending far too soon
My fondest wishes sadly hewn
And left to nought piled in a heap
While dreams undone have gone to sleep !
My heart is full, I hear it beat
I will not bow to man’s deceit
Hard to accept, the world’s so cruel
And feeds much fodder to the fool.
The more I see the more I learn
Perhaps we each may take a turn
It’s like a wheel of chance we play
We win or lose from day to day.
However fate’s not always kind
And justice is sometimes quite blind
Is there a path to help us win
Please find a way to let God in !
From deep in my heart I avow now
This pain you feel will soften somehow
And wait in a corner on a shelf
Until you’re ready to face yourself
Be unafraid there’s nothing to fear
You’ll be secure, the vision is clear.
Always remember you’re not alone
You are hooked-up to God’s instant phone
Just call on His name and He’ll be there
To lighten the burden with your prayer !
There’s much to be said for a life well spent
More to be taught from what the years have lent !
There is a darkness that I see
It gently closes over me
The shades of night begin to fall
The shadows seem to cover all.
There is a quiet that I seek
And feel no need to eye or peek
There are no words that I must say
For now is time to bid good day !
There are no cares I wish to share
My thoughts this day seem quite threadbare
I’m feeling worn this early morn
A bit unsteady and forlorn
Perhaps today I need more sleep
I’ve obligations I must keep.
I know that I’ve too much to do
Sometimes I never think it through
I try so hard to give my best
And fear that I won’t pass the test
One can’t lose heart of that I’m sure
But with God’s help we’ll be secure !
At times life hangs upon a thread
Or teeters on a word unsaid
Tense moments caught before a scene
Or shouted words just too obscene,
Who knows what happens in a flash
Or what may cause a fatal crash ?
Tis smart to always take great care
Be conscious of what, when or where
For life comes with no guarantee
Take time to think, wait, watch and see !
Oh my dear child so full of glee
I wish that you would visit me
Perhaps we could have tea and cake
What kind of pastry shall I bake ?
It would be nice twixt me and thee
To share a special tea party
And if you’d like to bring a chum
I’m sure that we’ll have room and some !
Looks like it’s time to settle in
Time for a game of bridge or gin
Perhaps we could do Scrabble too
I’m pretty good at words, are you ?
Of course I’d rather be outside
But there’s no place that we can hide
The weather is not playing fair
And drizzle’s raining ev’rywhere !
It seems to me that nature rules
Things that we do, tools that we use
This happened aft the world became
Under the dominance of Cain !
We’ve been good friends for many years
Through smiles and laughter, doubts and fears
We have been up, we have been down
Hugs and kisses, at times a frown
I’ve often thought what shall I do
Without a pal who’s just like you ?
It’s been so long that I’ve forgot
What life would be if you were not
And so today I want to state
That we are buddies soon or late
Whatever else may chance to be
I’m here for you when you need me !
I feel a chill, it fills the air
The sun’s asleep I know not where
Today’s the day of our black moon
I truly hope it shows up soon.
Oh how much I desire to see
Celestial sights with clarity
Since there’s no shining moon tonight
God’s skies o’erhead twill be e’er bright !
I had some company today
They were scratch-scratching on my door
They really hadn’t come to play
Although I knew what they came for !
There is a shelf about so high
That from the doorway you can see
And on it those treats that you buy
Stuffed into jars filled with goodies.
“Well how are you” said I to them
Two pair of eyes grew very wide
“How nice to see you once again
And would you like to come inside ?”
They never seem to make a mess,
They leave no crumbs upon the floor
They are polite and cause no stress
And leave no paw prints on my door !
Too often in the twilight as day begins to fold
And all of life’s real stories prepare to be retold
There rises intermission when nighttime hushes all
As somewhere in the distance a vision is recalled.
Now we are brought again to the stories of the past
Where tales of our commission were never meant to last
And in these final moments as life does fade away
We’re left with the decision of what we have to say.
Farewell to all our colleagues, both family and friend
And if we’ve ever hurt you, please know it is the end
There will be no tomorrow this is a last goodbye
One final wish we ask for, remember do not cry !
I never thought that I would find
A place where I’d have peace of mind
Or learn to live beyond the race
That infiltrates life’s current pace.
It seems as though change is okay
To challenge us from day to day
The problem is we need to learn
That God helps us each in our turn !
The infamy of events gone by
Those scenes of the past that made us cry
The tearful times no one will forget
Sad memories that do haunt us yet
These are the shadows of all we hate
That we’ve learned to fear but much too late.
These agonies fail to go away
Increasing more with each passing day
Oh when, oh when will this madness end
Oh where, oh where does the blame depend
May the Lord above help us find peace
And from this anger grant our release !
There are times I rest idly on my bed
While many visions spin around my head
And I am caught in pages of the past
Among those hopes and dreams that did not last.
Now I’m sure hopes are prayers we cannot say
And dreams must keep until a later day
Lose not your faith in all that is to come
This Power we trust is neither blind nor dumb
And all we ask is that we may but share
The smallest bit of our God’s loving care !
Days are I wakeup with such pain
Especially if it should rain
I’d rather stay tucked in my bed
Until all of the rain has fled
However that might take more time
I could move to another clime.
To tell the truth I’m not quite sure
If that solution is the cure
Perhaps since ageing is the case
I’m stuck here with the human race
I guess I’ll have to settle for
These last few years with battle sore !
The city lights grow dimmer now
They’re hidden by the fog somehow
The mist moves softly through the trees
And cloaks the rustle of the leaves.
I hear a moan that comes and goes
I feel a chill rush to my toes
Too soon the winter will be here
With vestiges of vision drear.
If all the frost and snow arrive
How shall we then keep warmth alive,
We’ll bundle up in winter’s best
Hats, gloves and scarves with padded vest.
Do not lose heart no matter what
We’ll give it all that we have got
The seasons seem to march on by
The years grow wings and lives do fly !
