There is a bit of keen advice that I would give you all
That as you travel through your life try to avoid the toll
Of those so full of avarice who wish to be a friend
Take care because their interest sometimes is but pretend !
There is a bit of keen advice that I would give you all
That as you travel through your life try to avoid the toll
Of those so full of avarice who wish to be a friend
Take care because their interest sometimes is but pretend !
Oh power that rules, attend us please
Our old world is trembling on its knees
The mountains rumble the waters surge
All seem to be begging for a purge,
The woodlands burn with a heat intense
Where is the force of our own defense ?
This world in chaos appears to be
What’s left to us of civility
Open your eyes it is not too late
To challenge the demons at the gate !
I had a dream the other night
And woke from slumber with a fright
The late air whined it seemed to say
A storm is due some time today.
The wind rushed through the limbs of trees
And shuddered quickly in the breeze
The darkened clouds did hesitate
While all about were in a state
There in the gloom one ray of light
Did pierce the sky and caught my sight,
Perhaps the storm may change its mind
Now wouldn’t that be super fine ?
We’re at the end of our two hundred year story
And live in the shadow of our former glory
We’ve traveled the path with our destiny calling
And tred on the way where the mighty are falling.
We’ve lost all our values and our honor is gone
The next battle ahead can now make us a pawn !
If wishes had wings I’d rise and fly
Across the wilderness of the sky
To meet with the angels in the air
And follow them home to tarry there.
Now angels appear to be quite strong
I am guessing that their lives are long,
Perhaps thousands of years more or less
A great mystery I must confess.
If I have to wait too long to see
I pray they’ll keep their watch over me !
Another morning has begun
Tis grand to feel the warming sun
Its fingers slipping through the blind
Leaving the dark of night behind.
The lacy patterns on the wall
Keep spreading till they reach the hall
I can no longer laze away
Its time to rise and greet the day !
Some might think that I am foolish
Or even that I’ve lost my mind
I am not known to be churlish
Not spiteful, silly or unkind.
I have no wish to tarry on
Or try to take up too much space
Please note, I am no paragon
Quite long ago I learned my place.
Our lives should be more simplified
With cause for no great mystery
We live by faith and faith implies
Our honor is our victory !
Oh little birds where have you been
We’ve missed your chirps and cheeky spin
It seems as though it’s been too long
Since you’ve been here to sing your song.
The winter’s gone, so glad of that
Can’t wait to hear C sharp or flat
Oh little birds please fail us not
Without your sounds what have we got ?
Our lady in the harbor with torch held oh so high
She waves as strangers greet her while they are passing by
She is a precious omen that opens wide the door
To bid each one a welcome who comes here searching for
A little bit of heaven, the chance to be one’s own
Reach out to touch the angels who call this land their home !
Sometimes our lives just melt away
Where have they gone, we cannot say
Tis like a wind across the sands
That garners strength, makes no demands.
One moment here, another there
Perhaps unsafe, sometimes unfair
Oh Lord, please help us day to day
Show us the way we need to pray !
Your happy dreams are always there
You simply need to know just where
The searching can be half the fun
Even when being done by one
True happiness comes from the heart
It only needs a smile to start.
Remember when it rains all day
The plumpest worms come out to play
Thus birds and chicks all gather round
And chirp a song with joyous sound
Reminding us no matter what
Our memories are all we’ve got !
My heart is worn, it’s tired too
The battle’s done seems overdue
The time is now to call an end
While there’s still strength left to defend.
A faithful trust, a tender care
A loving God I’m sure is there
I need no favor to implore
For who am I to ask for more ?
Reach out, reach out, I cannot grasp
I feel my life escaping fast
Hold on, hold on, your turn is near
To face the Lord pray without fear.
Awake, awake, the hour has come
This journey long will soon be done !
Sometimes I think I hear the angels sing
Quite like the sound of gentle whispering
I’ve never heard the flutter of their wings
Though it might add to our imaginings !
I do not think I’ll ever get to see
Those angel faces watching over me
There in the shadow of our ecstasy
Where they are veiled in anonimity.
I am prepared to trust they are all here,
God’s helpful watchdogs with their mission clear
To seek and find as each last path appears
The journey follows without mortal fears !
Close up the door turn out the light
The fire rages through the night
The world is mad it’s lost its way
There’s nothing more that one can say.
The mob has turned into the norm
Their anger has become the storm
Like Sodom was so long ago
The story told, who does not know.
Why have all been so very blind
There is no answer left to find
It’s too late now life’s gone astray
The end is here you’ve had your day.
Begin again as all must do
With millions gone there will be few !
I have learned so many things
Bout a circus with three rings
And the seals whose flippers clap
Underneath the canvas flap.
Acrobats who ride a horse
Doing tricks around the course,
Circus master in his hat
Strongman and the lady fat
All of this it used to be
When the west was wild and free.
Caravans were part of that
Cowboys with their lariat
Indians in native paint
Daredevils made ladies faint
Such a thrill it must have been
To be there, remember when !
The smell of springtime permeates the air
That promises our weather will be fair
I cannot wait to see the lilies grow
With yellow daffodils tall in a row.
Soon all the crocus blooms are fled away
Daisies are preparing for their long stay
How marvelous to know with every spring
This place becomes a world of blossoming !
The poet paints a picture but not with paint and brush
His words create the image there’s music in his touch
Each has his own conception there are no two the same
Tis an old profession and Shakepeare’s favorite game.
Some think the words are foolish and pale in empty air
Please remember David and his Psalms we all still share
His words were so profound they will live forever here
They brought us close to God they will never disappear !
I have walked by the side of the road
As the Lord helped me carry my load
I have treasured the words that He spoke
Though my spirit’s been bent it’s not broke.
I have wandered across this great land
With its vistas all spacious and grand
Like the lady who lives by the sea
Holding the torch of our liberty
And I know in my heart it is true
I adore the old red white and blue !
I’ve failed to take the time to say
To folks I’ve met along the way
How grateful I have always been
For kindness shown, to my chagrin.
So many things get left behind
I’m loathe to think I’ve been unkind
But vow to try to make amends
As best I can to all my friends.
For friendship is this special thing
That carries care upon its wing
And shares the hopes we’re dreaming of
Amid abundance of our love !
The maladies of age are such
They rend us tender to the touch
How difficult our days become
This is not some great prize we’ve won.
Perhaps tis just we’re wearing out
Old bones begin to creak and shout
As like some aged trees we sight
We hold the dampness of the night.
The cold repelling off our skin
Is like a thief who slithers in
It seems the comfort age requires
Comes with the warmth of old hearth fires !
I have been to the top of the mountain to seek my destiny
I have walked through the valley of shadows to find my clarity
I have begged of the gods above me to silently hear my plea
There on the altar of justice I accept whatever must be !
There is a world that lives within the magic of my mind
And in this place I know exists the actions that I find
A road that twists along the way and creatures that I meet
Are there to greet this stranger as I travel on their street.
When I was small I had this toy
Of cotton cloth, it was a boy
And when I went to bed at night
I’d hug my Sammy oh so tight.
He wore long overalls of blue
His shirt was striped with pockets too
Brown hair had he of woolen yarn
His eyes were closed, his mouth a yawn.
I loved my Sam with sleepy eyes
My daddy won this grand surprise
One summer night twas after dark
In Palisades Amusement Park.
They’d spin a wheel around and round
And when it stopped the number found
Could win a prize but mostly lost
Just one thin dime was all it cost.
Sam lived with me many a year
He was my friend and brought me cheer
But after daddy went and died
Perhaps Sam ran away to hide.
I never found him after that
Of course we moved to a new flat
I’ve often hoped that he did find
Another child to treat him kind !
The year has come and flown away
This is another sanguine day
How fleetly time does pass us by
And leaves behind the tears that dried
Like memories we can’t forget
Or dreams we’ve had that haunt us yet.
I’ve learned so much as I have grown
We all must try to stand alone
For that is how each life does end
With only God as our fast friend !
There is a dream that comforts me
That one day I shall live to see
The power of our God will be
To loose our chains and set us free !
I am a saddened stranger lost
Here in this world so tempest-tossed,
Its fury which does much abound
Leaves none unscathed upon the ground.
It rages through this honeycomb
Of life that is to peace unknown
Oh Lord, be kind let calm abide
There’s no place left for us to hide !
I’ve traveled wide across the sea
To feed my curiousity
I’ve been to lands so far away
In places that I chose to stay.
Along the ridges of the cliffs
Or edges of the ocean’s rifts,
The wonders that are ours to taste
Like cultures we must not erase
Fill this old world with magic spin
And beauty we may revel in,
With so much more that’s yet to come
In God’s expected new kingdom !
