We can’t go back, there is no way
To what was once our yesterday
When all we wished or hoped to be
Became forgotten memory.
Tis sad to see our former joys
Discarded there like broken toys
That line the cluttered roads we take
O’ershadowed by dreams we forsake.
Worse to believe that this is all
That’s left for us to chance recall
Those glory days which made us great
They’re gone and now it’s just too late !
The winds of change blow loud and long
I hear the call both wild and strong
While in my mind the challenge grows
From my head down unto my toes.
My heart’s in pain and agony
There is no help that I can see
This world I’ve known melted away
Please help me God, I’ve lost my way !
How fleet and swift our lives pass by
With minutes lost, the hours fly
There is no time called used to be
What we once knew did rapid flee
And left us there in life’s abyss
Our hopes awash, our love unkissed !
I try so hard to no judgements make
Some things I’ve seen cause my heart to break
I sight fear on the face of a child,
Abuse and hatred reports high-piled.
The truth began with one infant’s birth
Who was sent to us to save our earth
Today it’s like He was never born
This world is angry, lost and forlorn.
How can we discard what life’s about
Belief in our God and faith devout ?
I have walked along a lonely path that leads I know not where
And found myself adrift upon a deserted thoroughfare
I have wandered in the empty fields abandoned by the flock
And trudged the way where bales of hay were stored for the winter’s stock
Now here I am alone at last close to my true destiny
And all I’ve learned and thought about is a mystery to me !
The stars shine brightly through the night
The planets veil themselves from sight
The moon plays hide and seek up high
The winds do moan and heave and sigh
The world at best seems lost in space
And cannot seem to find its place !
When men were giants in the land
And custom held one kissed the hand
The dragon was the primal fear
And jousts were fought both far and near.
These were the times when men were brave
And sped their steeds to maidens save
The simple facts were brought to mind
And courage was not hard to find.
But now this is a newer age
And life has found a diff’rent stage
As truth is hid behind each door
The glory waned and is no more !
I sense the silence falling on my ear
What is this message that we cannot hear
Who reaches out because of these dark fears
I think the day of tribulation nears.
Awake, I know the morning will soon come
What is it we are all escaping from
There can be no true place of safety left
And that of which we dreamt leaves us bereft !
I feel the silence all around
There is no movement to be found
No beating heart, no breathing sound
The quiet permeates the ground
The air is still, unused, unbound
The loss intense, the wound profound !
A flower in a garden that’s treated like a weed
And gathers no attention nor garners any heed
It soaks up what is left or can wither in the brush
Or bides its time in silence with ne’er a need to rush.
A hardy sort, of course, that will weather every storm
And seizes on each moment that bides without a form
While there among lost shadows of times we never dreamt
Lie memories forsaken, abandoned or unkempt !
Before my eyes the changes grow
And this old world I used to know
Is disappointing, one by one
We’ve lost our values, life’s undone.
I cannot recognize this place
Sometimes I think I’m lost in space
While all about folks speak in tongues
Like Babel, we have climbed the rungs.
Oh would that we might congregate
And from our sins chance separate
Entreat the Father of us all
To grant us grace ere we shall fall !
To those days that were and are no more
With youth and beauty flown out the door
To leave us dreaming what used to be
When times were young and our lives carefree.
Oh to relive those elusive days
Where we thrived on love and hope and praise
Since all’s now past, chances diminished
The road is done, we’re almost finished !
Oh how this world has changed since I
Was young and only stood knee high
The universe has grown much more
So many went there to explore.
We’ve learned how to communicate
With sound and vision up-to-date
Our satellites now fill the skies
All are results of enterprise.
Midst all the challenges we face
Like limbs and organs to replace
With all the changes we have seen
Has faith become an act obscene ?
We’re at the end of our two hundred year story
And live in the shadow of our former glory
We’ve traveled the path with our destiny calling
And tred on the way where the mighty are falling.
We’ve lost all our values and our honor is gone
The next battle ahead can now make us a pawn !
The morn arrives both bright and new
With fragile hope soon overdue
The day awakes midst tender light
Seems we’ve just bid the world goodnight.
How fleet the time does pass us by
As youth to age will quickly fly
We barely touch what might been
Then wander off into the wind !
A gentle thought tugs at my mind
Where is the peace we’re meant to find
Where is the joy life promises
With love for all the reward is ?
Who makes the rules and carries out
The consequence of fear or doubt
Who rends the earth or tears apart
A mountain top or broken heart ?
While all of this continues on
Is there a force to wish upon
Perhaps a dream we’ll never see
Or paradise that cannot be ?
There is no winner in defeat
That moment lost will not repeat
The air is chill the world is blind
What is it that one seeks to find ?
For strength and faith shall ever be
And like the wind will set us free !
Oh my beloved Lord, wherefore hast Thou forsaken me
And left me here to weep and sigh for an eternity ?
Oh, Dorothy where are you now
Who’ll till the fields, who’ll milk the cow
Who’ll tend the geese and raise the hen
Did we forget remember when ?
The farmer is a dying breed
Who’ll grow the food and plant the seed
What shall we do to stay alive
How will the rest of us survive ?
The world has lost its common sense
Its main concern is self defense
When all is done we’ll look around
Discovering we’ve run aground !
Dear Lord above what shall we do
The future now seems overdue
I wonder what would Noah think
Of mankind trembling on the brink ?
My heart seems caught on tethered wings
And shuns the song the siren sings
The wind that whistles through the trees
Echoes soft murmurs on the breeze !
This land I’ve loved for all my life
Is rife with anger, hate and strife
How did we lose our sanctity
What ghostly force have we set free ?
Is this the end of what we’ve known
And fruit of all man’s evil sown ?
I wish I had a quiet space
To patch my dreams and to replace
The worn out parts of shattered hope
That need research new ways to cope.
I’d like to think that there remains
A wistful thought which still contains
The wisdom that God’s left behind
For those of us who are not blind.
The special traits that used to be
A part of our resiliency
Have faded into lost success
And only add to our distress.
The times we knew, forever gone
Like dinosaur or mastodon
Can it be true, we’ve lost our way
Is this to be our judgement day ?
There in the past, the story grows
It lives the lie that sorrow knows
And carries on it’s tattered wings
The futile hope that dreaming brings.
Where did the thoughts of yesterday
Get left behind or go astray ?
How did we lose our earthly core
Or fail to reach for sky once more ?
It seems to me, we cannot know
How far and deep that loss will go
I need you Lord, to purge my soul
And help me please, maintain my goal !
There were two souls long lost at sea
They sailed so far but couldn’t see
One steady course to set them free.
They traveled past the great divide
And cruised the world on either side
There seemed no chance they would collide.
They traveled hard and traveled long
And tried to fit and to belong
In foreign waters filled with song.
Remembering God loves us all,
Perhaps one day it will befall
No matter where that port of call !
There dimly through the window seen
Vast veils of snow upon the green
Old visions of once long ago
Gave credence to the falling snow.
Seems time has lost its human face
That haunted every special place
And greets us all in manner same
Small difference in stance or name.
Snow laden folk in iced disguise
With runny nose and sparkling eyes
Were there to greet us as we passed
Lost images in looking glass.
I’m sad those days have flown away
This world is cold and dark and gray !
I am a fish and wish to abide
Close by the sea and edge of the tide
But the fish in me is never sure
If my atmosphere is foul or pure
And swims about with no aim in sight
As I float to make it through each night.
The snake has left its skin behind
In hope that those who watch are blind
To cuckold all before their eyes
And speed their cultures quick demise
All values lost the powers lag
Who will defend the heroes flag ?
I miss the dream that slipped away
It fluttered by and did not stay
I’ve missed it all these many years
And always will recall the tears.
This dream of ours that was so sweet
Left me alone here incomplete
My heart was lost and insecure
Too sad to say there’s been no cure.
My love was strong my heart was true
I hoped somehow yours could be too !
When I remember who I used to be
Before the wealth of years had set me free
I dwell upon the days when we were friends
Those glory days before the story ends
Its tender moments that the heart did find
My memories are pieces left behind.
