Tis said that life’s a learning curve

While on this road one must not swerve

Remember to keep goal in mind

Let moderation help you find

Those aims that you are searching for

And keys to open freedom’s door !

Isn’t it amazing we are living on the brink

With each and every moment of how we breathe and think

We’ve been taught to earn our keep in the old fashioned way

And we are growing better with what we do each day

The lesson we have learned is that God is always there

While He watches over us and does our burdens share !

I’d like to say that I know all

The promises I should recall

But since I was a tiny tot

It seems to me there were a lot.

While childhood was to home confined

I promised that I’d always mind

In Sunday school I swore that I

Would love the Lord and never lie.

Then as I grew and went to school

I pledged the flag and golden rule

When I was twelve, Girl Scouts came next

I took the vows and learned the text.

Now at thirteen I was confirmed

That’s where Commandments all were learned

High School became a brand new stage

I entered in another age.

I’d like to think I’ve done my best

For family, God and the rest

As truth and faith, integrity

Mean everything on earth to me !

Now I have trod thouands of miles

From the Highlands to the low

And wandered o’er its paths and stiles

Threading through the fields that grow.

I’ve hiked so many mountain peaks

And clambered over rough stone

I’m bored by shopping and boutiques

I prefer to trek alone.

It’s ancient times that intrigue me

With stories that I have known,

What’s captured me is history

And the legends it has sown !

There was a child that used to be

Wide-eyed and cheerful, full of glee

And then one day all got to see

That grownup person who is me.

I’d like to be the way I was

But that can’t be I’m sure because

Along the way we took a pause

To teach us how a grownup does.

One finds that learning’s never done

The process blurs once you’ve begun

No guarantee ’tis always fun

The race continues till it’s done !

When I was young and meek and mild

I knew the manners of a child

But as I grew and aged a bit

My ways improved I learned to fit.

It seems to me that age must share

Abilities of love and care

Yet caution all to patience earn

As one by one each takes a turn !

EXCUSE ME but today is one of those frustrating times when I am awash in waves of nostalgia that simply will not evaporate or disappear.  I find these inexplicable occurrences are triggered by some minute detail, a date or an odd notion, secreted away in the intricate catacomb of the mind !  That’s a mouthful of words, but all true.  At this moment, I believe the trigger to be the occasion of Memorial Day !  For those of my generation, I would imagine that World War Two ( note: in deference to those unfamiliar with Roman numerals ) is the guilty impetus today !  Perhaps almost 75 years later, one would expect the memories to have faded into nothingness, however that war remains as viable today as it was all those years ago.  The names of places that existed only in travel brochures or the geographical almanacs of the era easily roll off our tongues plus we can actually spell them, like Enewetak or Tinian.  Just imagine, a generation deprived of the option of earning degrees that can think AND spell !  Is that like walking and chewing bubble gum at the same time ?  HAHA !  I wonder.  Can anyone explain Common Core to me, is it related to Common Sense ? Thank you for your help !              Sincerely,                               Claire B.
