Oh, still and peaceful starlit night,

With not a whispered breeze in sight,

Those rustic arms that reach too bare,

Oblique, into the sky now stare,

And seeming wait, for some small gift

Falling from space and earthward drift.

Now stark and graceless awkward tree

Like autumn wind reminding me

Years fall one upon another,

Swiftly reason to discover,

These arms that long to grasp and lift

Embrace the wind cast time adrift.

Thus ageless trees with patience stand

Their vast retinue in command,

Through darkest night or brightest morn,

This faceless wonder earth adorn.

Thou mournful moon  that shines so distant clear with innocence,

Belies a history that cradled weeds of decadence

Yet glows with ancient tales of lords and kings and mighty  things,

An eloquence which speaks through space and time forbearance brings

And moves the mind to dwell on deeds and wisdom circumspect,

Now seeing not believing, this strange power shall wills direct.

Night sister to the sun, the sailor’s tool that bares the soul

Though man may probe this parent to the tides exceeds control.

Thus mighty force indulging man’s wildest inclination

Give credence to a thought that consumes with dedication,

And here one learns through willful ignorance to tine the test,

That orb which swells with deep intensity, observes the rest,

Abounds with manifold myths and legends no time destroys

And in its strength doth twist and blend both countless tears and joys.

SAILS ( 1982 )

In the distance I  can spy

Colored sails against the sky

Rainbowed hues so bright and clear

Seeming far, yet very near.

Small triangles in the breeze

Guileless gliding on blue seas.

Some that turn from north to west

Others skimming on the crest,

Masts so tall, they groan and sigh,

I can see their pennants fly.

Brave little craft beckons me

To a life that’s bold and free

In the harbor or adrift

Let me share your journey swift,

Cast upon the water’s wave

To become your fearless slave.

Out of the stillness of the hour

It seems to me that

I can hear the crying

Of the quiet times

That still must be… now dying.

Where laughter once

Full filled the halls with glee

There is but only a dream

Reminding me.

Would that I might achieve

That day of youth’s bright joy

Would that I might retain

For everyday this buoyancy of living

Somehow I’ve outgrown that joy.

Will I relive it ever?

Listening close

I hear the answer echoing

Throughout the silent halls,

It seems to whisper . . . “Never”.

A rocky wall, a crumbling fence

A dried-up brook, a withered vine

A fallen bough held in suspense

That rests upon a clementine,

Unkempt yew side a tumbled post

A grim reminder of neglect

While lamp to spider’s web played host

Its use long past one would suspect.

This sentry by a garden gate

With primrose path and weeds profuse

Makes statement that fair shouts “Ingrate”,

To focus thought on life’s abuse.

We’ve seen the waste misfortune brings

And many styles that pruning need

Applied not just to vernal things

All spreading hopes crave care to breed.

When I have watched ten thousand clouds pass

overhead and seen

Them pass again this way no more in

splendor’s show serene,

When I have held the dearest heart close

to my breast once more

And known a love without a fear I

never knew before,

When I have filled my wildest dreams and

spent my sweetest day,

When there is nothing left to learn and

nothing left to say,

When all of time continues on as

if it faced no end

And I have told my last farewell to

lover and to friend,

When all my tears and hopes are gone and

life wills no delay

Then may I close my eyes in sleep and

blow my breath away.

DARK SHADOWS ( 2001 ) 2013/05/22

The shadows dark do cloud my mind

And as a serpent slowly wind

Into a river rife with fear

Where floats one vision most unclear,

Too strange that as I wend my way

My feet seem slow and mired in clay.

From dusk till dawn these shadows keep

My restless self foreign to sleep,

Then with the wakeful hours of morn

My eyelids shut in careless scorn

Upon this world which might just be

A lesson in civility.

A wretched mass we lonely be

We draw our lots of destiny

And fearful though our days may seem

We’ll not forsake the growing dream

That time has furrowed on our brow

And hope can only but allow

To breathe and swell within our soul

And make it seem but one more goal

For man to grasp the will to live

And every moment courage give.

The wind blows wild across the plain

Another soul to seek acclaim

Like shipwrecks shoaled on foreign shore

Their voices raised, God’s grace implore.

As trees their arms do upward sway

The whole world kneels , her prayer to say

Where ancient Moorish castles rise

Their towers reaching for the skies.

This prayer of man that heaven sent

Begs only for his heart’s content,

Bold edifice of legendry

Now stirs the soul to poetry

And wills the weak to stronger be

And make fast friends of you and me.

If today should be my last to keep

I’d deed to you, before I sleep

Those treasures which I’ll leave behind

To seek the rest that I will find.

There are these gifts to give away,

One is the peace youth will delay.

While I have many dreams to share

I also have some love to spare,

I’d pledge that love to fill your heart

Next to the wish your fears depart.

I’d bid you learn to live like me,

With courage, truth and dignity.

If this day were my last to spend

I’d will to you before its end,

The glow of joy and calm of mind

That through our destinies must wind,

And pray then as we say goodbye

There will be ventures you will try,

Perhaps a mountain you will dare

Because your future may be there

And if you fail, shed not a tear,

I leave you cause and faith sincere.

I can but beg your grief will see

The wisdom in my legacy.

What is there above stripped limbs that I can spy

Wedged between those spiny arms that reach too high?

One browned and muddy shelter grown obsolete

That time ago, to some bird, was world complete,

With its leafy covert fallen to the ground

Where it lies in lifeless and decaying mound.

Now empty and deserted this wasting nest

That in prime, to brooding chicks gave healthy rest.

Poor lonely home of use no more, bleak and bare,

Lost legacy of one transient flying pair

Struggling in that tangled sea of life’s morass.

Thus observed, swiftly it is, through age we pass,

To leave behind this remnant of what had been

Some message of deep concern to kith and kin.

Consider lessons now sealed within those walls,

In its girth, did gift the heart and cushion falls.

Then build our nests for each youth, both sleek and trim,

Though we guide them well, the rest is left to Him.

Oh, bright hope and trembling aspiration,

Threatened by reality’s confrontation,

Fertile dreams that skirt the realm of success

With thoughts that magnitude in deed possess,

Coerced by conscience ofttimes seized by doubt,

Bold in fervor and brave façade without.

Schemes that reek with brass determination

And beg aloud for joint cooperation,

Now restricted by society’s concept,

Whilst confined by past attitudes inept,

For this is woman, born to serve not lead

With scant concern that she fulfill her need.

Supple arms and quivering femininity

Promising passion with whispered divinity,

The striking blow of vanity to find

This fragile one conceals an agile mind.

CYCLE ( 1965 ) 2013/05/05

Yesterday, a leaf fell from my favorite tree,

In silence, all alone, I watched it slip and slide,

Turning somersaults, drifting, so melodically,

Graceful, with nought other passage than downward glide.

For one fleet second, thoughts of revolution grew

And cast themselves across the windows of my mind,

Where fragments of one’s journey weigh for times, untrue,

Inciting spasms of questing doubt, life doth blind.

We are, each soul of us, mediocre in our way,

Endowed with talents born long ago, yesterday.

Skills that we erringly believe to be unique

Consume other needs, while that special praise we seek.

Observed through private mirrors which the mind collects.

And colored by the ego that our pride reflects,

Images, much gilded by vision clouded, seen,

And silvered by the hope that we are as we dream.

Mankind, foolish, now wanting, thinking what will be,

Wastes his days midst effort veiled by futility.

That cycle, which in youth, had its first beginning,

Will end in age, with neither losing or winning.

THERE ARE SMALL SOUNDS ( 2006 ) 2013/04/27

There are small sounds that fill my mind with thoughts that soar

While minute, so bold they challenge any ocean’s roar.

They’re sounds that only love can heal or kindness teach

When strength’s beyond the deepest place one heart can reach.

These sounds of silence fall too soft on hollow ears

But speak more plainly than the eloquence of tears.

That last sound , the labored breathing of one adored,

The closing sigh which signifies he’ll come no more,

These are the sounds that will confuse a lifetime much

And leave an empty void that only time can touch.

Petals falling from a rose to the garden bed,

Tight laughter that issues forth when goodbye is said,

That stirring of the pulse with heartbeat quickening

Unbidden, heralding each pains awakening

Or hushed darkness of the night now moving slowly

While the rush of the wind in mid-flight moans lowly,

Some weeping sounds which from the tearful heart are wrung

As sounds of chanted mass are in a choir sung.

These have lingered in the air with hope awaiting

Within our lives , some restful aim contemplating.

Hence hearken to those sounds declaring time’s ending

With all the consequence of old thoughts attending.

Acknowledge, in the distance, one trumpet crying

Both man and beast in manner like are soon dying.

Then understand the difference that love has made

And in that final moment, hear an accolade.

MARTYRED MARCH ( 1977 )

Oh little star that shines alone

On lonesome dark and friendless night,

Oh sprightly sprig that blossoms forth

With nary other buds in sight,

Oh tiny bird that chirps a song

When all his friends are fast in flight,

Oh warming wind with gentle breath

That sings an air with dawn’s delight,

Have you ever looked beyond night

Into the early morning’s glow?

Have you ever smelled the incense

On the hill where staunch violets grow?

Have you ever heard ceaseless sound

Where gushing streams trickle and flow?

Have you ever felt springtime’s rain

Driven with an incessant blow?

This is the heritage of March

Impudent harbinger of spring

That sallies forth in manner rude

Yet bearing April on the wing

And so bold and harsh seducer

Ever brusquely keep refraining

Release that cold and chilly grip

Thus end winter’s will sustaning.

You shout that life is not complete

That all you try meets with defeat,

That everytime you stand up tall

Somebody pushes and you fall,

And yet whenever I have said,

“Please  try again.” you shake your head

And vow tomorrow’s not the day

For you to find another way.

I wonder if you had the chance

You’d even take a second glance,

I think the problem’s not that fate

Has passed you by or come too late,

I’m now convinced that you don’t care

About the things we give and share.

It’s why you halt and will not see

You can’t accept that failure’s free.

Gladly, this new day rises with a lemon-colored sun,

Spreading its fan with fingers of light, their journey begun

The early dawn painting water colors across the sky,

Running rampant in a kaleidoscope mornings apply.

Buds tumbling o’er each other in a circus of display

Assailing the senses with sights and sounds in bold array.

A blessing to have left behind the dark sadness of night,

Too full, with all its gloom pervading length and depth and height.

And life’s cycle begins again, its merry youth slender,

So clear and clean, healing breath, new hopes and dreams engender.

Do you hear the falling rain

Splashing on the window pane

Pelting down in steady beat

Muddy junction where they meet,

Earth and water, lake and sand,

Awesome plight, begging command?

Have you felt a day so bare

Graying sky and whining air,

Bending boughs groaning distress,

Swaying trees blend with the rest?

Not a structure stands aloof

“ Pitter-patter,” cries the roof,

Eave and peak pleading complaint,

Rocky walls bulge with restraint,

Rivers rising where they fall

Protruding ledges cover all

Cringing creatures, great or least

Strangely silent, bird and beast.

Observe the stark windblown trees

Squirrels darting neath their leaves

Their endless chatter ceasing

With nature’s wrath increasing.

A strength and power display

Nothing secret in the way

These bold torrents need unload

Earth and gravel in the road,

Rushing paths fast pursuing

Shallow roots, loss ensuing,

Surging on now fast then slow,

Mid the turmoil as they flow,

Rivlets running to the sea

These lifeless remnants carry.

Have you known a day so bleak

Taking toll, the mild and meek?

Like the tempest of the mind

Fate attacks the just and kind,

Simple creatures fail the test,

Leaving judgement to the rest.

LIFE’S CHALLENGE ( 2005 )

When a flower drops its petals

and its seeds are blown away

And its dry stalks tremble, break

to drop and lie amidst decay,

When a tall tree bends its wide limbs

and its leaves are swept away

Seeking safe and sheltered haven

hence await another day,

When a dream still waits unbidden

as the years have caused delay

And the hopes that fill a young mind

through the years have gone astray

When a heart that’s old and mellow

beats its last and sad farewell

Searching for the final hospice

where the soul at peace may dwell,

When the aims of every lifetime

falter, tarry and dispel

Knowing soon the battle’s over

and its goals have too short fell,

There among these winter feelings

where the hurt will rise and swell,

Face that fleeting day of anger,

sally forth and chance rebel.

FRIENDS ( 1983 ) 2013/04/13

Above the roof and chimney rise

I tend my garden in the skies,

I sleep with stars and wake with sun

Until my way in life is done.

I weep with mist and cry with rain

And live with hope that mellows pain.

I pay my way and now have learned

To value all the friends I’ve earned.

Build me no castle, sing no song

Carry no ill though hurt is strong.

When I’m old and youth’s spark is gone

Walk close beside me here and yon.

Leave me no paths that I must choose

Will me no fortune I may lose.

Unkempt and fledgling is my cure

That wanders oft with faith secure.

I’ve shaped my goals that they may fit

Into a mold with pride on it.

I’m bound to earth by God’s own will

With courage breathing hushed and still.

When to the trembling brink I’m tossed

And wisdom flees, appearing lost

I thank my God on bended knee

That love thus far has sheltered me.

If I should pass this way no more

Or leave my life on foreign shore

Or cast my lot away before

The tempest and the wind’s great roar

Will filch away my soul’s encore

Then I will come this way no more.

If I but pass this way once more

Through tall and trembling grassy shore

With winds that reap capricious lore

And seasons flush as were before

To yet again my faith restore

Then I may pass this way once more.

If I can’t pass here as before

If all my deeds should fail to score

And wisdom’s love has lost its core

Then I won’t pass this way once more

Unless I find the strength to soar

Above all this forever more.

PIRATE SHIPS ( 1978 ) 2013/02/13

Tall ships and white sails heading in the evening breeze,

Majestic rolling, lilting on blue sailing seas,

Voyage into the setting sun’s gaping expanse,

Where mystic stars and waves do shyly greet and dance.

To dwell where dark mystery of the deep endures

Landlubber I do wish somehow I might secure

A berth on these and fly with steady falcon’s wings

Into the sky light on a mast that sways and sings

With pirate tales of secret treasure troves galore,

Though buccaneers I’m told, steal ladies’ hearts no more.

How sad that even privateers with time grow old

No longer range the shrinking main to search for gold,

But rather sit in silence lusting for the past,

For men like ships with age, retire in grim contrast.

Yes pirate sloops died long ago in empathy

Like wanderlust that wanes for lack of sympathy,

While all that’s left are wistful sounds by seagulls made

Reminding us that once in time, adventure played

A melody upon the currents of the wind

And frolicked on the swells like a school of dolphin.

Hoist winch cast leaden anchors of the mind away,

Set sail for glory that recollects another day,

Embrace the basic elements of earth and sky

And on the seas of life, your fighting colours fly.

IMAGES ( 1986 ) 2013/02/06

Some grotesque images now cast upon an eerie wall

Do lend an unconscious foreboding to an empty hall

And conjured ghostly shadows that breathed very long ago

When sunlight filled every corner of the timid ego

Within which dwelt the lonely distance that life’s runner goes

Around that course the mind must pause to find if merit chose.

Sometimes in later days, our shadows fall here on the ground

To waste away because no useful purpose has been found

And cultures shaded by distorted views that lie in wait

Awake to grim reminders that success arrives too late,

While lifetimes spent in searching for that one beginning start

Find it at last when all time’s happenings desert the heart.

SEAPLANE ( 1982 )

Frail silvered bird of man’s invent

In air or drift its time is spent.

My heart flies high on lofty wings

That listen while the current sings.

Not hindered by the traffic’s clog

Nor crippled by the moving fog,

Bold sailing vessel of the sky

Will light on waves that heave and sigh

Like gannet, gull or tern at home

It glides across the azured foam

And banks and heads into the breeze

To land upon its wide-webbed skis.

The thought occurs, as well it might

Of all it’s seen within its flight,

Most images that on the ground

Will thought and deed intense confound,

When viewed from such a distant height

Do lose their power and their fright

And fade into the circle’s knot

Reminding us what’s been forgot.

If man can rise above the roar

And restful through the clouds can soar,

Observe that life seems twined about

And to his aims, remain devout

While blithely sailing cross that sky,

Yet never place his sight too high

To live in peace and reach content,

Remember sometimes wings get bent.
