Lives are like the canvas all white and clear

That too soon begins to cloud up with fear

Add a hint of ochre as we all grow

With colors God paints into each rainbow

If circles or squares lapse into the breach

May they be beyond lost destinies reach.

As each canvas becomes part of the dream

Of what we’ve reached for or where we have been

Or the brushes get tired or weather worn

Take care we don’t all get tattered or torn !

We search for the rainbow to show

These colors wherever we go

The blue for the calm of the sky

The yellow to keep our hope high

Green to remind us of rebirth

And brown like the color of earth.

There’s purple to honor our love

Of God and the angels above

While red brings great passion to life

With orange to challenge the strife.

Now lavender favors our past

The pink helps the sweetness to last.

The chartreuse works to calm the mind

But aqua seeks patience to find

The peach has a wonderful glow

And the gray, the wisdom to know.

I think the magenta’s the best

It outshines the whole of the rest

I wonder if God wore a coat

Would pale lily capture His vote ?

This morning I awoke with lyrics in my head, “look, look, look to the rainbow, follow it over the

hill and the stream”.  It reminded me of God’s promise to Noah after the deluge that He would

set  “His bow in the sky” as a token of His covenant with mankind.  Isn’t that a lovely thought?

Just the image of a rainbow brings quivers to the heart and gladness to the eyes,   so very

magical . Good choice !  Lyricists romanticize rainbows as in “Finian’s Rainbow” ;  “The

Wizard of Oz” with its wistful classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, which leads us to

William Wordsworth in a similar vein:  “My heart leaps up when I behold  a rainbow in the

sky:  So was it when my life began;  So it is now I am a man;  So be it when I shall grow old,

Or let me die !  The Child is father of the Man;  And I could wish my days to be Bound each to

each by natural piety”.  Wow !  However, today I choose to embrace the last stanza of “Look

to the Rainbow”.    “Look, look, look to the rainbow

Follow the fellow who follows a dream

Follow the fellow, follow the fellow

Follow the fellow who follows a dream”.

I’m okay with that, how about you ?

Sincerely,

Claire B.
