I hear the sound of running feet
Laughter of children from the street
All playing on the pavement wide
Darting about from side to side.
Their shrieks of glee are full of joy
Including every girl and boy
Oh such great fun that’s to be had
Without scoldings by Mom and Dad.
I love to see the youngsters play
In God’s fresh air day after day
What a sweet pleasure it would be
If all the world could feel that free !
The morning sun peeks through the blind
In hopes it will an outlet find
It zigzags swiftly cross the floor
To bounce off mirrors by the score
The shadows puddle and disperse
Erratic movements seem rehearsed.
How fast the sunlight streams clear through
In such great haste, so much to do
You must not wince in sunshine’s glare
Just shade your eyes and do take care !
This morning we opened the windows wide
To let fresh air swish around inside
The breezes blew all of one accord
In every space where the dust had stored.
While a little voice whispered to me
Aren’t you glad to be young and free
Well, that’s half true, I have to admit
But young’s not how I’d describe the fit !
